Are Bobi Wine Supporters Lying or Being Misled? The Janet Museveni Death Rumour Raises Serious Questions

Uganda’s political and social-media space has once again been thrown into a heated debate: Are some supporters of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, deliberately spreading false information, or are they themselves victims of misinformation?The question has gained renewed attention following claims circulated on social media that First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, wife of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, had died.Among the individuals associated with the circulation of such claims is Ugandan political commentator and activist Fred Lumbuye, who has previously made controversial claims concerning the health and whereabouts of senior Ugandan political figures. A video published online in May 2026 claimed that Lumbuye had confirmed Janet Museveni’s death. However, no credible evidence supporting the death claim was presented in the material we reviewed. Another name mentioned in discussions surrounding the claims is Willy Asimwe. However, Gise News Updates has not independently verified all of the statements attributed to him and therefore readers should distinguish between documented statements and allegations circulating online.

Janet Museveni Appears Publicly.The strongest development challenging the death rumours came on August 19, 2026, when President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni appeared together publicly at State House Entebbe.

According to Uganda Broadcasting Corporation, the President and First Lady hosted international evangelist Bishop Dr. LaDonna C. Osborn during an engagement that focused on Uganda’s transformation, faith, leadership and the longstanding relationship between the Osborn family and Uganda. The Daily Monitor likewise reported that Janet Museveni attended the State House engagement alongside President Museveni and Pastor Patience Rwabwogo. The newspaper described the appearance as a rare public engagement following a period in which the First Lady had maintained a relatively low public profile.

The First Lady also posted on her official X account on August 19, describing her meeting with Bishop Osborn and recalling the visit of Osborn’s late mother to the Museveni family many years ago. She also spoke about the forthcoming consecration of Pastor Patience Rwabwogo as an Episcopal Bishop.

That public appearance creates a straightforward factual problem for anyone who had recently claimed that Janet Museveni had died.

So, Are They Liars or Ignorant? This is where the debate becomes more complicated.

If an individual knowingly publishes information they know to be false, that can reasonably be described as deliberate deception. If, however, someone receives an unverified claim on Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, WhatsApp or X and shares it without checking the facts, that person may be misinformed rather than deliberately dishonest.

There is an important difference between the two. Being politically opposed to President Museveni does not automatically make someone a liar, just as supporting the government does not automatically make someone a reliable source of information. The real issue is evidence.

• Who first made the claim?
• Is there identifiable evidence?
• Has the person’s family confirmed it?
• Have credible news organisations independently reported it?
• Has an official government or institutional source confirmed it?

The Bigger Question for NUP Supporters

The issue should not be whether every NUP supporter is a liar or ignorant. That would be an unfair generalisation.

The more reasonable question is:

Why do some political activists continue to circulate extraordinary claims without sufficient evidence, and why do some supporters accept those claims without demanding proof?

Political leaders and their supporters have a responsibility to encourage evidence-based political discussion.

Opposition supporters have every right to criticise the government and President Museveni.

Government supporters likewise have every right to defend the President and his administration.

But neither side benefits Uganda by treating unverified social-media claims as established facts.

The Lesson for Every Ugandan

The Janet Museveni death rumour should therefore become a lesson in digital responsibility.

A false death announcement is not harmless entertainment. Such information can cause unnecessary fear, distress and confusion among families, friends and the wider public.

The fact that Janet Museveni appeared publicly with President Museveni at State House Entebbe on August 19 provides strong contemporary evidence that the death claim circulating online was false.

But the bigger challenge remains: How many other false political stories are Ugandans currently believing simply because they come from someone they trust politically?

That is the question Uganda’s social-media generation must confront.
